Since the arrival of the age of factories, we have relied on springs to do jobs that were important but very boring. During the dark days of World War II, fortunately, a mechanical engineer earning a living at a Philadelphia shipyard noticed a spring acting in a very odd way. On account of this, he understood that maybe springs could be fun – and profitable.

That mechanical engineer was named Richard James, and he watched spring get knocked from atop a shelf and down to the floor. The bit that got his attention was the acrobatic style in which the spring, rather than just plopping on the floor, “stepped” in a sequence of arcs from a shelf, to a stack of books, then a tabletop, and then to the floor, where it re-coiled itself and stood upright.

Stimulated by this particularly animated spring, James ran tests with several kinds of steel and different tensions, and eventually designed a spring which can “walk” down a ramp. James’ wife Betty called the new toy Slinky after discovering the word in a dictionary and realizing that it was a good description.  Read more...

There are many different punishments for getting your dog to learn the difference between right and wrong, and there are many dog trainers that will tell you that their method is the best way or that a different type of punishment, whether it be positive or negative punishment, is better than the method you’re using now.

Dogs need punishment to keep them in order and to teach them what is acceptable and what is not, without some form of punishment there would be no way of showing your dog these things, and no way of training them.

There are two types of punishment for your dogs; there are positive punishments and negative punishments. Positive punishments are punishments when you give you dog something, for example giving a tug on the leash or verbal correction. Negative punishments are when you take away something your dog needs or expects such as treats or toys or having the dog be taken away from you.

I am a strong believer that positive punishments should only be used in moderation or not at all, serious injuries to your dog’s safety and health may occur by over using or incorrectly using positive punishment.
