You Bought The Puppy Now Learn How To Train Him

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The thing about dogs is that they are rather like children, so the more you put in the more you will get out. Like small children they need as much love as you can give and a structure in place to not only keep them safe but aware that there are rules to be adhered to in order to function successfully in the world at large. A new puppy in the home will certainly mean adjustments will need to be made as this little guy will prove to be a delightful handful for the new parents in the home. Remember your new baby will most likely have come from his mother to you so everything will be confusing and a little bit scary as he views his brand new home for the very first time.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Having a dog in your life can be wonderful, and the unconditional love they give is comparable to none. But what if your dog is beginning to exhibit aggressive behaviour, similar to a child who is suddenly out of control. Early abuse may be the reason for the change in what seemed a happy go lucky character, or what is more common the lack of training in the early days of the dogs life. It will not make you feel any better to know that the neighbours in your street are aware of his aggression and you wonder how long it will be till they do something about it.

Have A Docile Dog

Once you initially start training you can use visual cues, treats and rewards and other tools, but ultimately your dog should be able to respond as you need with just the sound of your voice. Be consistent with all of your voice commands so that your dog is never baffled about what you want.

A dog will do anything to please you but he needs to clearly comprehend what you want. You must be the established “alpha dog” and you must be firm and patient and always follow through. It will not take too long if you are unswerving. Your pet will work hard to please you if he obviously understands what is expected of him.

In order to circumvent boredom, it is advised that you have a habit for either walks and exercise or a play session. This can help your dog avoid the boredom that can lead to destructive behavior.

Puppy Training 101: Essential Accessories Needed To Teach Your Puppy

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Are you ready for Puppy Training 101? To get started, you will need three specific pieces of equipment to properly train your puppy: a training collar, a leather training leash, and a 15-foot length clothesline rope.

If you’re already thinking that your puppy’s present leather collar will work, and that his 4-foot chain leash will suffice, you may as well stop reading this article and save yourself and your puppy weeks of discomfort and hardship. There simply is no substitute for the right training equipment. A training collar is a slip-chain type made of metal. Don’t substitute one that’s made of nylon.

One of the numerous things an individual’s puppy is going to understand will be to have confidence in you. However your puppy will never acquire that sense of confidence if you substitute improper training accessories which will not be efficient. When there is no trust there can be no respect, and no respect indicates no need to please. No desire to please indicates no motivation to learn. Add them all up and you possess an uncontrollable puppy which will never accomplish his rightful place in the human planet.

Golden Retriever Training: Why Exercise and Training Are A Necessity

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

As a part of any Golden Retriever care regimen, adequate training should be considered a must. While the Golden Retriever breed is naturally given to love and affection, a dog that’s been poorly trained — or not trained at all — can be a real handful. Golden Retrievers, as adults, can reach 80 plus pounds of running, jumping fun.

Golden Retrievers like to jump, and are especially fond of jumping up on new friends. Here is where a good bit of basic training can pay off. You’ll want your Golden to develop good habits early on, and unwanted jumping is something we’d like to correct.

Fortunately, Goldens take to training easily. However, it’s important to note that owners should plan on putting in effort and time to develop the right habits in their Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Training can be fun for both the trainer and trainee alike, and consistent training will pay off. Remember that your Golden does want to please you, so you both really share the same goals when it comes to training.

Dog Training Made Fun For Your Dog

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

There is nothing better than getting a new puppy. But with that comes the task of training. And when done properly you will have a well behaved dog that you can be proud of. There are many techniques of dog training and the one we will discuss first is Recall Training.

Recall means that the dog responds when called. If your pet is going to come when called you have to make sure they are paying attention. To begin with you have to make sure that the dog “checks in” with you periodically and to pay attention when you ask for it.

Reward plays a big part in this type of training, reward every time they pay attention. Every time your pet stops what it’s doing and comes over to reward them with a treat.

When outside reward him when he comes up to say hello. And reward him when he responds to his name. Repeat his name several times before you feed him in his dog dish or give him a new toy to play with. If you say his name and he looks at you give him a treat. One of the hardest places to train is outside where there are a lot of distractions. When your pet is outside there are a lot of other things to be interested in other than you. For this reason, begin puppy training in the house, maybe select a room like the kitchen or the bedroom.

Make Sure To Brush Your Dog’s Fur

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Your dog needs to be brushed often as this would make the dog feel loved and cared for. If you follow the grooming techniques, it will be a very healthy exercise for the dog. Also frequent brushing keeps the fur clean and removes hair that otherwise fall and spread on the floor of the house.

Time spent fostering your dog ensures that you and your pet will have a strong friendship. This is complimented by the fact that he will be content and fit for most of his lifetime.

Brushing your dog’s fur on a routine interval promotes a healthy appearance. Their fur takes on a shiny look after trimming their hair and brushing their fur. In every sense, your puppy’s fur will have a lusty gleam.

If you pay more attention to the dog, it will make him more self-confident and he will love the feeling of being loved. Dogs also love to be clean and well groomed. They become very attached to the masters and they respond very positively.

Frequent brushing also helps in improved blood circulation. This is very helpful in avoiding several diseases. Older dogs which cannot get up and walk, need to be paid more attention and if frequently brushed, they feel revitalized and healthier.

Succesful Dog Potty Training

Monday, February 15th, 2010

When you’re looking for tips and tricks on dog potty training, you are likely at your wits end trying to figure out how to keep your dog from using the bathroom in your house. Nothing can be more frustrating with a new dog than having it relieve itself in the most inappropriate places.

Just like children, dogs must be potty trained, although their potty is the great outdoors. There are several different methods available to house train a dog. Which one you use depends greatly on your dog’s personality and what you feel comfortable with as their owner.

Some people use things like puppy pads which they move closer to the door as time goes on. However, not all dogs respond effectively to using puppy pads. Sometimes, it is better to just approach the training with an end result in mind rather than using an aid such as puppy pads.

When potty training a dog, it is very important to find a method that will work specifically for your dog. There are many online programs that an owner can use to try to train their dog. Researching the different methods online is an important part of picking the right one. You want something that you will stick with long-term.

Training Your Dog Using Dog Cages And Kennels

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

When you are searching for a dog kennel for your pet, remember that there are certain ones that are made for different types of dogs, and not every cage will be correct for your particular situation. There are kennels which are designed and made strictly for the comfort of small animals which are being transported. There are also the kennels which are designed with security in mind, made especially for the larger pets.

Dog cages come in many different sizes, and have many styles that serve various purposes. Make sure to get one that suits your exact needs and specifications.

If you are travelling with your pet then may want to get a cage that is fabric with a door of mesh and a zippered roof; or you may want to buy a hard plastic type of cage with metal doors, or a kennel which is totally metal mesh save for a solid floor. All of these are ideal for keeping your pet still while on a long car trip for vacation, or even for transporting the animal from one training event to another. It also makes a great way to carry your favourite canine when free roaming pets are not allowed.

Owning a Dog: Turning Challenges into Joys

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Are you a dog owner? If so, then you will undoubtedly agree that sharing your life with a dog has it’s shares of ups and downs. There are wonderful moments, and then there are others that are extremely challenging for all kinds of reasons. The fact remains however, that through it all, dogs are still “man’s best friend” in my opinion…it is just harder to make friends with some dogs than with others.

With our current dog, an eight year old miniature schnauzer, we have definitely faced a few challenges. Within a short time of him coming into our lives, we discovered that, while a smart and loving little guy, he also:

1. Growled and jumped on anyone who came to visit, and barked at absolutely everything he saw.

2. Absolutely hated going to the groomers to get clipped.

What could we do? We spoke with our veterinarian and did some additional research to discover some strategies and techniques to help train him…and us as well. This article will share some of the things we learned.
