CCNA is the usual starting point for all Cisco training. This will enable you to operate on maintaining and installing routers and switches. The internet is made up of many routers, and big organisations who have different locations need them to allow their networks of computers to communicate.

As routers connect networks together, find a course that includes basic networking skills – perhaps Network+ and A+, and then do a CCNA course. You must have a basic grasp of networks before you commence any Cisco training or you’ll probably struggle. There are four specialist areas of training in a full CompTIA A+ program; you’re qualified as an A+ achiever once you’ve passed your exams for two of the four areas. For this reason, it’s usual for colleges to offer only two of the training courses. In reality to carry out a job effectively, you’ll need the training for all four areas as a lot of employment will require the skills and knowledge of each specialist area. Don’t feel pressured to qualify in them all, although it would seem prudent that you study for all four areas.

The fact that you’re here means we have a hunch that you’re at least considering retraining, which means you’re already ahead of the pack. Now you just need to research and follow-through.

We’d recommend that before you start any individual training program, you run through some things with a mentor who knows the industry and can give you advice. They can assess your personality and assist in finding the right role for you:

* Is working with other people your thing? Do you like to deal with the public? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you can get on with on your own?

* What do you need from the market sector you work in? (Things do change – look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* Having completed your retraining, would you like this skill to serve you till you retire?

PC and network support staff are ever more sought after in Great Britain, as companies become progressively more dependent upon their knowledge and fixing and repairing abilities. Because of the complex nature of technology, growing numbers of IT professionals are being sought to dedicate themselves to the many areas we’ve come to rely on.

When did you last consider how safe your job is? Normally, this only rears its head when we experience a knock-back. But in today’s marketplace, the reality is that our job security doesn’t really exist anymore, for most of us.

Of course, a sector experiencing fast growth, where staff are in constant demand (as there is a massive shortage of fully trained staff), creates the conditions for lasting job security.

The 2006 British e-Skills investigation showed that twenty six percent of computing and IT jobs remain unfilled due to an appallingly low number of properly qualified workers. Meaning that for every four jobs that are available around computing, there are only 3 trained people to fill that need.
